Aglaonema sits in the Araceae family and its sap carries calcium oxalate crystals, which sting. A cat or a dog that chews a leaf can end up drooling, pawing at its mouth and off its food for a while. Most foliage plants that tolerate low light survive it rather than enjoy it: a philodendron stretches towards the nearest window and the gaps between its leaves get longer, and a peace lily quietly stops flowering. An aglaonema holds its shape and keeps its pattern. Put one three or four metres back from a window, or in a room lit by fluorescents from nine to five, and it carries on looking like the plant you sent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt has a limit. No plant photosynthesises in the dark, so a room with no natural light at all and no lights left on will eventually thin it out. Deep shade is fine. Let the top few centimetres of soil dry before you water again, and ease off over winter. Keep it warm and out of draughts, because anything under about 15 degrees sets it back, and an air conditioner blowing straight at it does the same. Wipe the leaves now and then. They're broad enough to collect dust, and dust is light the plant doesn't get.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhy are my aglaonema leaves turning yellow?\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUsually too much water, sometimes cold. Check the soil first: if it's still damp a few centimetres down, leave it longer between watering and make sure the pot is draining rather than sitting in a saucer of water. If the soil is fine, look at where the plant sits. A cold draught, an open window in July or a vent blowing on it will yellow the lower leaves the same way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eDoes an aglaonema need a window?\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo, and that's the point of it. An aglaonema does well several metres from a window, or in an office lit only from the ceiling. It just needs some light for part of the day.
