The peace lily is the plant people reach for during a difficult time, and the white spathe is most of the reason. It reads as quiet and unshowy in a week when nothing else is. It also stays in the room for years rather than days, and it asks very little of someone who has other things on their mind. That combination is why it sits at the front of our sympathy plants range.
One thing worth knowing before you order. We deliver to the family's home on a day that suits them, not to a funeral, a memorial service, a funeral home, a chapel or a crematorium. We can't deliver at a set time, so we're not the right fit for a service. A plant that lands a few days afterwards, once the visitors have gone and the house is quiet again, is the one that gets noticed.
The same qualities hold outside sympathy. A peace lily makes a good get well plant for someone recovering at home, because it copes with a bedroom that never gets much light, and it works as a housewarming plant gift for a shady apartment.
Mostly through spring and summer, and more often in brighter light. The white sail isn't petals, it's a spathe, a modified leaf that wraps around the small spadix carrying the true flowers. A peace lily in a bright indirect spot will push out several over a season. One in deep shade usually stays green, which isn't a problem in itself, it just flowers less. If you want more spathes, move it nearer a window without putting it in direct sun.
Yes. Peace lilies carry calcium oxalate crystals, so a cat or a dog that chews a leaf can end up with a burning mouth, drooling and an upset stomach. It's irritating rather than usually serious, but it's enough to steer away from a household with an animal that treats foliage as food. A calathea is the straight swap: the same tolerance for a low-light room, patterned foliage instead of plain green, and non-toxic to cats and dogs. Choosing a plant that suits the household is your call, so it's worth asking first if you don't know the home well.
Low to bright indirect light, no direct sun, and soil kept evenly moist rather than dried right out between watering. The useful thing about a peace lily is that it tells you what it wants: the leaves droop visibly when it's thirsty and stand back up within a few hours of a drink. Wipe the leaves now and then to keep them glossy, and give it humidity where you can, which a Brisbane summer supplies for free. Winter indoors is the harder season, when heating dries the air out.
Almost always thirst. Water it and it'll lift within a few hours, and no harm is done if it happens occasionally. Drooping that doesn't recover after a drink points the other way, to soil that's been sitting wet, so check the pot is draining and let the top few centimetres dry before the next water.
Because that's what a spathe does as it ages. It opens white, holds for a few weeks, then slowly greens and fades back towards the foliage. It isn't a sign of anything wrong. Cut it off at the base once it's gone over and the plant puts its energy into the next one.
