Choosing a housewarming plant

Think about the room before the plant. A new place usually has one bright spot and several dim ones, and the person living there hasn't worked out which is which yet. Something that tolerates lower light is the safer gift, and anything sculptural does more for a half-furnished room than a small plant on a full shelf.

New home and welcome home plants

A new home gift arriving in the first fortnight is better than one arriving on the day, when the hallway is full of boxes and nobody knows where anything goes. A welcome home plant, for someone back after a long stretch away, works on the opposite timing: send it to land the day they get in, so the house doesn't feel shut up.

Lunar New Year plants and the good luck framing

Plants are a long-standing Lunar New Year gift, and the ones that suit it are the upright, glossy, visibly healthy sort rather than anything delicate. The same framing works for a business opening or a first day in a new place. If you're sending for Lunar New Year, get the order in early in the week, since we don't deliver on Sundays.
