Fine cream pinstripes run across deep green leaves, and because the striping isn't stable, every new leaf opens a little differently. It stays compact and upright, better on a desk or a shelf than in a floor corner, which makes it a straightforward birthday plant gift or a housewarming plant for a home that's short on space.

Good to know:

Light: bright and indirect. Harsh midday sun bleaches the leaves, and a dim corner fades the pinstripes back to plain green
Water: when the top few centimetres of mix have dried out, then water thoroughly and tip out the saucer. It minds sitting wet far more than it minds being a little dry
Warmth: happiest between 18 and 29°C, out of the way of air-con vents and cold draughts
Habit: compact and upright, in a 140mm or 200mm size
Not one for pets, philodendron leaves are toxic if chewed
